Cleansing from all sin

  1. Exordium
    1. Introduction
      1. Checks the Antinomian and Gnostic idea that there is no moral duty and obligation in Christianity.
      2. In showing the moral force of the Christian life, he establishes the doctrine of cleansing, so necessary to fellowship with God (not Gnostic fellowship). The groundwork for moral obligation of holy living.
    2. Proposition: The cleansing from all sin.
    3. Exposition: This cleansing basic to the only scriptural view of the Christian life, which is opposed to Antinomianism.
  2. Body
    1. Notice that from which we are cleansed.
      1. Hamartia - vs. 7. Its nature - ia noun.
      2. Adikia - vs. 9. Its nature (exists in unsanctified).
        1. Bending - crookedness.
        2. Decentralization.
    2. Notice meaning of cleansing.
      1. Since carnality is an inner condition, cleansing must be an inner work.
      2. Katharidzo - taken from figure of grape vine dressing - purge - John 15:2.
        1. Inner purification.
        2. Inner rectification.
    3. Notice the means of cleansing.
      1. Without the blood there is no cleansing.
      2. To show its efficacy is contrasted with ceremonial cleansing, Heb. 9:11-14; 10:1-14.
      3. Illustration: destroy disease by death of white corpuscles.
  3. Conclusion

But it is necessary to confess that we have carnality, in order to be cleansed.
