Christ’s Mission Announced

Mark 1:14, 15, 21-28, 35-39

By David Woods

Discussion: Imagine yourself as one of the Jews who lived in Jesus’ day. What do you think about Jesus would have made the most impact on you?

(The idea that He could be the Messiah? His healing power? His authority in explaining the Scriptures?)

In verse thirty-eight Jesus gives us His mission statement for His life.

Big Idea:Jesus came to preach the good news of the kingdom.

Discussion: What agenda(s) did the people have for Jesus?

(Some expected Him to release them from the oppressive rule of the Romans. Some wanted Him to heal them of their diseases. Some wanted a free fish lunch. Some wanted to hear good stories.)

Jesus’ ministry was accompanied by great miracles, stories, attacks on the legalistic religious establishment, and parties, among other things. Yet Jesus’ mission was to preach the Gospel.

Discussion: How was Jesus able to remain focused on His mission in spite of His many different activities?

(Consider verse thirty-five.)

Discussion: How did Jesus’ different activities further His stated mission?

Discussion: What is the mission of the Church?

(See Matthew 28:19. Our mission, as the body of Christ, is to continue the mission Christ began while He was on earth.)

Discussion: What are some of the different agendas that different ones in the Church have for Jesus (and the Church)?

(To be a political force, to be a social ministry, to develop/maintain a theological and practical pure Church, encouraging others, strengthening the family, entertainment, etc.)

Discussion: Is it wrong for the Church to be concerned about these issues?

Discussion: How can the Church keep focused on her mission while being involved in various good activities?

"The mission of the Church of God (Holiness) is to exalt Christ, equip the Church, and evangelize the world."
